A CATWALK REPORT

Enrolling a Fashion Journalism course at Central Saint Martins College of Art, my first assignment was to study a John Galliano fashion show. I had so much fun exploring this, even though it is not the most conscious show - hope you enjoy reading it as much as I was amused writing it.

Playful glamourism, is the word that sprang to mind, whilst seated front row at John Galliano latest show Winter 2003-2004 held in Paris. The dark room was filled with joyous beats that made the models dance down the mirrored runway lit up with pink neon lights.

The opening look in race green was a strong homage to the feminine silhouette with its emphasised waistline that continued to dominate throughout the show with tight pencil skirts, high waisted spacious trousers to bold close-fitting evening gowns. More is more, shone throughout the collection filled with rich materials like velvet, fur and floaty silks dancing down the runway in voluminous silhouettes over seductive dark back (and front) seamed tights.

The makeup was extravagant but cohesive all through the show with strong eyebrows, glossy red lip and intense eyes aspiring like something out of Alice in Wonderland to a naughty yet ladylike clown. The hair was styled voluptuous and added the final extravagant touch.

The accessories felt like they were inspired from John Galliano's anything but ordinary granny. The lavish pearls, the shiny charismatic shoulder bag created a provocative still chic granny vibe, something that Mrs Doubtfire could pull off if she were in the body of Karolína Kurková.

The winter season was embraced with a squandering knitted jumper attached with small balls to mini corsets cleverly styled with matching undergarments. Including floral patterns that were abstract and cleverly exhibited on nude hues that gave it a warm and far-away from spring infatuation.

The closing winter bride was not a dull presentation but rather a John Galliano display, an immense white creation cleverly put together with a touch of punk as its panels was held together with zips under a beautiful white fur, showing us again that luxury in the world of Mr. Galliano is not only glamour at play but the perfect marriage of luxurious materials with clever design. Something he cleverly showcased by himself stepping out at the final of the show in a sleek black outfit with a silver fox thrown on his shoulder.
